Frankfurt Airport, also known as Rhine-Main Airport, is the largest airport in Germany and one of the busiest airports in Europe. It is located about 12 kilometres southwest of Frankfurt city centre and is well connected to the public transport network via several motorways and the "S-Bahn" rapid transit connection.

Frankfurt Airport has two terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2) as well as several satellite terminals. In total, travellers have access to over 100 check-in counters, numerous security checks and a wide range of shopping, dining and service options.

Getting to Frankfurt Airport

There are several ways to get to Frankfurt Airport:

1. By car: The airport is easily accessible via the A3, A5 and A661 motorways. There are numerous parking spaces available, which can be reserved online in advance.
2. By public transport: The S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 connect the airport directly with Frankfurt city centre. The journey time is about 15 minutes. There are also bus connections to the surrounding cities.

Frankfurt Airport consists of two main terminals:

Terminal 1:

• Departures take place here mainly for flights operated by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners.
• Terminal 1 is divided into areas A, B, C and Z.
• In Terminal 1 you will find numerous shops, restaurants and lounges.

Terminal 2:

• Flights of other airlines, such as Ryanair, are mainly handled here.
• Terminal 2 is divided into areas D and E.
• There is also a variety of shopping and dining options in Terminal 2.

In addition to the two main terminals, there are several satellite terminals that are connected to the main terminals by buses or skylines. Depending on the airline and destination, you can take off from different departure areas.

It is best to find out in advance from which terminal your flight will depart. This allows you to plan your journey optimally and plan enough time for the way to the right gate.

Check-in and security check at Frankfurt Airport

The check-in process at Frankfurt Airport is usually straightforward, but you should still allow enough time. I recommend that you be at the airport at least 2 hours before departure.

Whether you're hungry or just need a break, you'll find a wide range of restaurants, cafés and takeaways at Frankfurt Airport. From upscale gastronomy to quick snacks, there is something for every taste.

In Terminal 1, for example, I recommend "The Squaire" with its numerous gastronomic offerings. Here you can have a leisurely breakfast, enjoy a delicious lunch or fortify yourself with a coffee.

In Terminal 2 you will also find many opportunities to eat. Try the typical German cuisine in the "Käfer's Bistro" or treat yourself to a cocktail in the "Skyline Lounge".

Tip: It's best to find out in advance about the opening hours and offers of the individual catering establishments so that you don't miss anything.
